I focus a lot on the president when I talk about politics, not without reason, he is pretty much the most powerful man in the world and influential in ways that are not immediately obvious, which is why The Toddler being elected is something that bums me out so much, plus I hate the man with the heat of a thousand suns.
But in all honesty I don't see him doing a ton of damage during his presidency, I should correct that, I don't see him doing much more damage than the Republican controlled rest of the government will do anyway. The most egregious stuff, possibly getting us into a war, evicting millions from the country looting the government for his own profit, and his kowtowing to Russia, is either something that the rest of his party want to do anyway, or in the case of the last, something so appalling to them that they will probably cross party lines to oppose it.
His danger is more in that he won't be a check on the rest of the government, more than his policy decisions guiding the government, if that makes any sense. And the new congress is certainly speeding ahead with horrible decisions already, what with the Ethics decision that thankfully backfired horribly on them(for now) and announcements today of bills to defund Planned Parenthood and gut Obamacare, actually the same bill if I read the news right.
The incoming president seems to mostly be setting the standard of discourse, they aren't being subtle at all about their intentions or their hypocrisy, because, well, The Toddler wasn't and the American people decided to select him to lead the nation!
In a just world, well, in a just world this wouldn't have happened at all, but excepting that in a just world we would see massive backlash against the Republicans during the midterms much as we saw it against the Democrats during the 2010 Tea Party wave, but unfortunately the demographics of the upcoming elections don't really support a Democrat wave and to be honest the Dems have been pretty terrible about getting in front of public perception on these issues, seeming to be pretty content to sit and just take PR hits from the GOP on the chin. Now it certainly doesn't hurt that the GOP basically has a massive media empire at it's beck and call.
All of this would be moot if the American people, particularly the white middle class and rural America, weren't such huge pieces of shit. It isn't like the people they are voting for are making it hard to figure out they are pieces of shit, it has been increasingly obvious that the politicians can say whatever the fuck they want, do whatever they want, and the voters will vote for them anyway as long as Fox News says that Hillary Clinton is the devil or some bull. And I don't want to hear any shit about the Democrats being out of touch with the concerns of rural America, the policies that the Democratic party espouses, and has for decades now, have been the ones that are responsible for the strongest periods of economic growth our country has ever had, I am not just talking about the recovery from the recession, which though a good example, is also a mixed bag and even now ongoing, if rural America and the middle class really cared about jobs and increasing their standard of living, they would be voting overwhelmingly Democrat, but they don't because they are huge racist terrified pieces of shit who would rather tear everything down to their level than see the wrong sort be brought up with them.
In short, things are gonna be pretty fucked up for a while, one bright spot is that some of them at least appear to have a hint of shame, if reaction to the Ethics fuck up earlier this week is anything to go by, hopefully that can be parleyed into something resembling progress.
