A matter of scale.

I read an article earlier today which now I cannot find that wanted to educate me on the proper way to hate on our president-elect. "Logan", it told me, for it was speaking to me directly, "Logan, you should not bother insulting the man for his minor stuff, but instead focus on the major things, doing otherwise equates something like a misspelled tweet with sexual assault, minimizing the latter."

The article had a point, though it said it using approximately two thousand more words than above, and its verbosity meant I had to spend about twelve hours thinking about it off and on before I had a response, and I have to say, point or not, I don't think that it is entirely correct in this case.

First, let's get this out of the way, no of course a misspelled tweet is not in any way on the same level as even one, let alone numerous, sexual assault allegations, they should perhaps not share time in the same article for this reason, but that doesn't mean that one shouldn't be talked about at all. See, in a way all these issues do have the same level of importance.

They are coming from a man who wants to, and will be, the President of the United States of America, a person who's every moment of the day, from waking up until going to bed, is scrutinized by the nation, someone who with a poorly timed phrase, not even a law or official speech, just an off the cuff statement, can throw stock markets into turmoil or provoke military action.
I submit to you that a person like this cannot afford to make a mistake even as small as a misspelled tweet, it shows that he is a person who doesn't scrutinize his own decisions, who doesn't notice details in his own plans, and someone who misses, or worse, doesn't care, if mistakes are made in the office of the most powerful man in the world.

Let's look at the other side for a second, do you think that if Hillary Clinton used her Twitter account in the same fashion as The Toddler, down to the lack of grammar, that it wouldn't have affected her campaign? Because I have news for you, it totally would have, and in a way it did, her whole email controversy was a relatively minor issue that killed her campaign, and yet somehow we should not pay attention to minor issues on the other side? That we shouldn't hold a man to the same standards? Or that we shouldn't expect our fucking president to have his lackey use spell check before posting a tweet? (by most accounts The Toddler dictates his social media posts)

That's the point right? We hold the President to a higher standard because they are not the same as anyone else, there is literally no one else in the country who gets to be President, they are scrutinized, criticized, and treated unfairly because they have to be

A while back, President Obama took a ton of shit from the right because he saluted with his off hand to a marine who was holding his umbrella for him, pretty sure the marine didn't care, but if he did he kept it to himself, like he was supposed to, and obviously it was a pretty stupid thing to get mad about, but that doesn't make it a stupid thing to notice, I would bet real money that after that happened, there was a protocol guy in Obama's ear going "dude you should have used the other hand" and you know what? He would have been right to do so because while that was a minor and easily overlooked mistake to the vast majority of people, to some it wasn't, and more than that, if you get in the habit of making minor mistakes, then it becomes easier to make major mistakes, after that incident we didn't hear about a similar one from the President ever again did we? He took the criticism on board and, regardless of whether he personally thought it was a big deal or not, made sure that it didn't happen again because when you are the President that is what you do.

The Toddler doesn't do that, he acknowledges no mistakes, apologizes for nothing, and never changes due to criticism, he deserves every ounce of criticism for every single one of his mistakes, lies, and crimes, from misspelling Presedent, to bragging about groping women, to shitting up China relations by talking publicly and openly with Taiwan. Every single one is worth scrutiny, and every single one is another piece of evidence the world sees and changes how the country is perceived.

He would love it if we shut about all that stuff, that alone is reason enough to keep talking about it. Remember the goal is to make this guys life as miserable as possible until he is out of the White House, that includes jumping on every single mistake and offense, again and again and again until he either learns to stop making them or does something so insane in an attempt to stop criticism that he must be removed from office.

That's my fantasy anyway.

By all means though, let's spend a little thought on how we talk about it, probably not worth including some three AM tweet hassling Vanity Fair in the same list as threatening to sue women who are alleging he sexually assaulted them, or inciting violence at his rallies, or what have you. He's done enough stuff to warrant separate articles on the topics, no need to force them all together.
