As you might guess, I think Donal Trump had a pretty shitty week as far as the campaign trial goes anyway. He spent a lot of time attacking the judge in his Trump University case which I don't think will win him any points with pretty much anybody who isn't already voting for him.
Some background on that, Trump U was a "school" really a series of classes, you could give Trump a lot of money and in return you would learn his secrets to real estate success, this didn't go as planned for almost everyone who enrolled, and he has been taken to court over it, the current case is moving forward, but will not have anything really happen until after the election, which saddens me greatly.
The judge involved is Gonzalo Curiel, born in Indiana to Mexican parents, why do I bring up his race? Because Trump did of course, suggesting that Judge Curiel should recuse himself from the case on racial grounds. There is no way to make Trump sound like a good guy in this, I mean he keeps trying to tell us that the Latino communities in America love him and will totally vote for him, so if that is true why should it matter that Curiel is of Mexican descent?
For a while during the campaign I thought that Trump was using racism as a tool to attract followers, and personally may not really hold an opinion either way on a lot of it, I am pretty well over that idea now, dude really seems terrified of anyone with skin darker than his.
So there's that, also Hillary Clinton finally managed to put together a speech where she made good attacks on Trump, making especially good use of the term "thin-skinned" which Trump responded to in the best way possible, by saying "I'm not thin-skinned, I am the opposite of thin-skinned" Which is basically his verbatim response to any criticism, from his policies to his small hands. The "Nuh-huh" response is getting old now though, and I don't really think it is going to win hearts and minds.
Today Trump announced that he might use his powers as President to retaliate against the PGA for moving its tour off of a Trump golf course and having it in Mexico instead, as near as I can tell the PGA did this for reasons unrelated to the man himself, rather something to do with other sponsors or what have you, anyway I know I want a President who uses the office to punish his business opponents.
And lastly he held a rally in San Jose, CA today, it was not well received by much of the population and protests followed by some minor violence and police action broke out. Some Trump supporters were beaten up, another was egged, Trump and his mouthpieces will try to spin this as the liberals attempting to silence free speech, but it is unlikely to work I think.
First, while I don't agree with protestors fighting I get why they are doing it, Donald Trump specifically and repeatedly has called massive populations of people everything from immanent threats to completely worthless and those populations and their supporters aren't happy about that, every Trump supporter at these rallies is viewed, mostly correctly, as someone who shares that opinion and thinks of them as subhuman.
So while I can't say I completely approve, I certainly can understand why feelings run hot, and Trump is capitalizing on it, you think it was a coincidence he had that rally in one of the blackest, most liberal neighborhoods of Chicago earlier this year? Or that he settled on San Jose by accident for the one tonight? No he wants violence to happen, ideally one of his supporters seriously injured or killed, but he'll take anything that gets headlines.
Anyway it's not going to work because nobody really cares, even the worst of the violence amounted to little more than scuffles, and the police kept things broken up pretty well, and didn't seem to hurt anybody to badly, that we know of at least. But until it's a full on riot, all the news is doing is taken coverage away from other stuff, Paul Ryan endorsed him today, but because of the protests no one seems to have noticed really, and the weekend coverage will be about that more than anything.
Anyway, that's what I tell myself, it is hard to tell sometimes if I am reacting rationally or desperately trying to convince myself that Trump doesn't have a chance and isn't inevitable at this point, I don't think I am, but how would I know for sure.
