And then there was TRUMP

John Kasich dropped out yesterday and I don't even know what is happening anymore. I thought him and Cruz were in it for the long haul and while I still hold out hope for convention shenanigans I have to admit that may be farfetched at this point.

Trump is the presumptive nominee, I suspect it will require uncommitted delegates to swing his way but he will probably take the nomination on the first ballot at the convention unless madness happens.

I don't understand why his opponents chose now to drop out, I guessed that Cruz was suffering from a crisis or something the other day but I wasn't really in love with the idea, and Kasich never had a reason to be in the race in the first place, so what happened? My guess is they were made offers, threats, or both that they finally couldn't ignore. Perhaps roles in the administration, Trump keeps mentioning Kasich as being under consideration for VP, Cruz could be angling for AG or possibly even a Supreme Court nomination, or simply maneuvering for a run in '20 or '24 .

I mean, I wouldn't hire either of them, but I wouldn't put it past Trump to do so,and I wouldn't put it past the GOP establishment folks to have been desperately attempting to get them out of the race for a while now so that the party could attempt some form of appearance of unity, even if they hate the candidate.

Anyhow, that is what I can come with at this point, perhaps we'll find out soon, or something will leak and amuse us, but at the moment all hail the presumptive nominee, for all intents and purposes the general election starts now.

Like you, my guess is that Cruz had a crisis and took Indiana as an opportunity to bow out, possibly with some sort of offer from the RNC and/or Trump. With Kaisich I think it's more likely that the RNC ordered him to get out, so they can resign themselves to Trump and get to work reinforcing the down ballot races that Trump's presence theoretically destabilizes.

In a way I feel a little sad for Oregonian Republicans who might have voted for Cruz or Kaisich last week only to have their candidate quit before the tally. (but not that sad.)
