Great Big Sea

I don't know if I have written about Great Big Sea before, arguably the greatest band to come out of Newfoundland ever. Most people haven't heard of them, they perform rock interpretations of Newfoundland folk songs, as well as their own original works.

I think the story of how I got into them is vaguely amusing. I spent a large chunk of my twenties unemployed, playing World of Warcraft, it is not a proud period I admit, in WoW, guilds tend to use third party services like Ventrilo to communicate during raids or other events, on my guilds Vent was one dude from Newfoundland who basically played Great Big Sea all evening long, I got into it from there.
None of my friends share my love for the band or the genre, outside of comedic songs like The Mermaid.

But I find jaunty sea chanties amusing, and traditional instrumentation used rock style is cool and good, plus there is something about a group of guys putting every ounce of their energy into singing about how Lukey's boat is in fact, painted green that I find charming.

They were a positive group too, during a time of my life when I wasn't feeling very positive or optimistic, their songs told me that, for a while at least, it was okay to not have the answers, and that it was possible to make things better, not necessarily that it would get better, but that I might be able to get there some time, others might get a different message there, but I got a bit of that out it and it helped some.

Check them out if that sounds like a fun thing for you.
