It's a weird thing to think about, growing up, and for some, pretty controversial. We talk a lot about growing up in ways like "putting aside childish things" and acting "mature", we also seem to think that fun isn't something adults should have, like you turn 18 and then your day should consist of going to work, coming home, and reading the paper until bed. Well, that is a stereotype of it anyway. Then we get older and we realize that once we are adults in the eyes of society, we haven't stopped being who we were, but now we have to figure out how to balance that against the harsh reality of paying bills and dealing with relationships and all the other little things you need to do to keep afloat in the US, some learn those lessons a lot earlier than they should have to, others learn them late(hello!) or not at all.
As we age and realize we can think for ourselves, we sometimes think some pretty damn stupid things, we figure out that the ideologies of the people who raised us aren't the only ones worth having, and find a the outside world actually impacts us, we generate opinions, many of those opinions are terrible and we eventually grow out of those too, but some don't, and it is one of those I wish to talk about today
Libertarians:
Really I could say any political beliefs, but I wanna talk about these guys, I have worked a lot of entry level jobs, which doesn't say great things about my career track, but that isn't the point, the point is, I have seen a lot of younger people in their first jobs, which means I have seen a lot of what I call "First Paycheck Libertarians" these guys join the workforce, put in their time, get paid, then, eventually, they read the part of their pay stub that tells them about all the taxes that got taken out, soon after that, Ron Paul gets another follower.
Libertarians are completely nuts on any topics having to do with the economy, jobs, or international relations and not a damned one of them should be anywhere in public office, their philosophy is so "fuck you got mine" that I would be surprised to see one pass the salt at a family meal. First Paycheck Libertarians haven't yet learned to think about the things they say and may be salvageable with work though, so there is hope, but we lose some to the scourge every year.
The Libertarian platform sorta emphasizes personal freedom, which is nice I guess, but it has very little to say about how a community operates when everyone is Don Draper from Mad Men, it believes that the market will self regulate to ensure living wages for those who work, and that any restriction on freedoms of either individuals or business will prevent that from happening and in fact create problems like the Great Depression/Recession, or the company town stuff from the early part of last century, you know, the ones where people worked basically as chattel slaves and were expected to thank the company for it, the same ones that would get help from the military to put down strikes or protests asking for things like enough money to buy food to live.
Their ideas are horrible, they are horrible, and if that sounds a lot like the Republican party we think of today, well the GOP hasn't spent the last couple decades courting the worst of the country for nothing, Rand Paul, the son of Ron, first of his name, is only not a Libertarian because there is an "R" next to his name on the ballot box, and he wants to be president.
Also his hair is dumb.
And I hate him
