What is bugging me the most about the state of American politics is the seeming lack of respect from our "leaders" when addressing issues to the public, an example from last week is a comment from the Senate Majority Mitch McConnell regarding making election day a federal holiday, he referred to that idea as a :blatant power grab" by the Democrats and suggested that pushes to increase voter turnout are somehow undemocratic because those voters might(probably) vote blue in elections.
He said this as if it should be obvious to all listening that this would be a bad thing, and I know he wasn't talking to me but rather to the GOP base, but I feel like it isn't unreasonable for me to expect that our politicians serve us a better class of bullshit.
One one level, he isn't wrong, if the demographics didn't support it we would almost certainly see a less inspired push from the Democrats for expanding access to the vote. Even now there is some reluctance from the corporate lacky wing of the party with regards to that issue, but he isn't even making an effort to not sound like a dictator there. Like, we all know the Republicans don't want certain people voting, namely anyone who isn't white, rich, and male, but usually you code that, you say things like, "Making election day a federal holiday would reduce security at voting sites and with the counting process, which would increase the likelihood of fraud." We all know that is bullshit, but we also know what he is really saying, which is that undesirables might be able to have a say in who runs the country and we can't be having any more of that now can we?
I know my politicians are gonna be horrible, but apparently it is too much to ask these days for them to lie about it, or at least to lie well.
Honestly it might end up being a good thing at some point down the road, I guess there is something to be said for being able to instantly recognize a horrible person as soon as they open their mouth. And I am not sure the GOP can go back to speaking in code now that they have embraced the chud portion of society so firmly, that part of the base can't stand subtlety and want no part of it, they want their politicians to be embracing racism and sexism on the national stage, anything less straightforward than that and they start losing interest, and embracing the "No BS" policy actually can be a good thing, when the things you are saying are good at least. But on the whole training the population to be annoyed with nuance is probably a net loss I guess.
