A budget was passed recently that I haven't talked about yet, not that there is much reason to I guess.
It's fine basically, more money for military, more money for domestic programs I actually care about, no provisions to pay for that so increase the deficit, but who gives a crap.
Oh yeah, the Dems folded like idiots on DACA, voting for the bill after being "promised" a "discussion" of the issue, which if I can see this is a completely meaningless agreement then we all know they can to, they know nothing will come of it, DACA is dead and nothing will replace it but they can say they pushed for a debate and the GOP shut it down, but we all should remember that they threw away their best chance to actually have something done, twice, because the party is too wishy washy to actually stand on it's morals.
I've said it before, the Democratic party as it stands now is only an ally to progressive ideals because it isn't the Republican party, both sides are mostly concerned with maintaining and increasing their power base, and while they would have us believe it is so they can use that power to push policy ideas that we want, that is a lie, they want that power so they can have that power, and will use it to get more power. Just because they have to pay lip service to progressive ideas doesn't mean they actually care about them, there are more true believers in the GOP than in the Democratic party, I mean, those true believers are appalling, but say what you will about the tenets of national socialism, at least it's an ethos.
Keep that in mind when the primaries for virtually all of our sitting senators come up, look at the voting records and find the progressive candidate running against them, vote for that one instead.
On a similar note, the president announced his infrastructure "plan" the other day, it's pretty bad, with many people up in arms about his proposal to change some SNAP benefits from their current form of money preloaded on a card, to food boxes of preselected foods. This is a stupid idea which would cost more money and not really work, but that is what we are talking about now. That part has no chance of ending up in whatever passes, we really hate the poor in this country but I don't think we hate them quite that much.
The problem is our elected representative, I can totally see another fight going down to the eleventh hour, having the SNAP stuff removed, and then Democrats folding once more, and as much as the food stuff is cruel and awful to millions, the remainder of the bill is still harmful as well, and at 1.5 trillion dollars arguably has a greater impact on more people. It amounts to a sell off of infrastructure to private companies, oh it doesn't outright say it, but it loosens laws that require impact assessments for the work that might be required while encouraging governmental organizations to contract out the work that is needed without really saying what those contracts need to look like. It should be rejected in it's totality, the one thing I agree with the president on is that we need an emphasis on infrastructure in the country, it is one project that truly has the potential to revitalize all kinds of industries while increasing employment and wages, but this plan seems to be an attempt to prevent any of that from happening, if it passes as is, which I suspect it won't, but see above, none of that will happen, instead we will see intermittent improvements as and when private corporations decide they need a contract for a time, and even then those improvements may come with costs we really shouldn't be willing to pay.
Yeah, SNAP is a big deal and the most overtly cruel thing proposed, but when it gets removed do not count it as a victory until you see what Senate and house democrats are willing to let slide.
