That's why I hedged with "If we don't get an agreement today".
So the Democrats caved and agreed to another CR until the 8th of February, in return, CHIP will be funded for six years, and Mitch McConnell agreed to allow a bill about DACA to come up for a vote later. That agreement is worth basically nothing so it will not surprise me in the slightest if he changes his mind, if he hasn't already. The President has indicated he won't be signing any such bill anyway, so good luck finding a veto proof majority there, though I guess the chances aren't zero.
Oh, and the border wall isn't getting funding.
From a policy perspective it is minor Democrat victory, with them getting a thing they want, and the GOP not getting a thing they want, but from a PR standpoint it's pretty much a loss, the government wasn't shut down for long so there was no chance to really control the narrative for whose fault it was, with both sides media arms blaming the other, the Republican's won that battle I think, not overwhelmingly and we'll have to wait on the polls to be sure, but I think a small majority of respondents will blame the Democrats for the shutdown.
Morally it's a loss too, the Dems had a chance to make a stand, to really push for meaningful change and to show the world the consequences of having incompetents in charge of our government, but given the smallest chance they reverted to the status quo, proving once again that they are the moral party only compared to the Republicans.
I am honestly pretty bummed, they tossed away a good chance to make something happen and instead continued to establish the precedent of caving on important issues, it gets easier to just let things go the more you do it, and the party surely has been letting things go for a time now.
Whatever, it's not the end of the world I guess, kids get healthcare, that is a good thing, immigrants may still get protections too, we'll see in the next couple of weeks.
