Why are you so surprised?

Alright so Mike Pence hired a lawyer and people are shocked, shocked, that he might do so.

I gotta say folks, why? Even if we assume he is innocent of even the appearance of wrongdoing(he isn't), there is an investigation with a incredibly nonspecific mandate poking around in White House affairs, last I checked, Pence spends a fair amount of time there and is sure to be at least questioned. We all know that you shouldn't talk to any officials with law enforcement credentials without a lawyer present right? Why should it be any different for those in the White House?

Really the only surprise is that everyone, from The Toddler down to the friggin tour guides, doesn't already have a lawyer either already on retainer or high on their speed dial list. Legal advice should have been consulted before any public communication, before any leaks even, hell before signing anything at all! The Obama administration went eight years without significant scandals, do you really think they managed that without having every damn thing they did vetted by counsel? How do you even approach literally the highest office of power in the country if not the world, without being aware of the need for lawyers to cover your every move?

I mean, the administration has been under investigation since before day one, there is no way this should have caught anyone by surprise, even if everyone went into it with pure intentions and not even a clue that the administration was up to shenanigans they should have still had a plan, the fact that there clearly isn't is perhaps the most reassuring thing about this entire fucking debacle to me.

I mean, look at this fucks, they had everything, literally everything, Supreme Court picks, all branches of government, the presidency, and yet they can't get anything done or even get out of their own way to prevent the investigation from steadily expanding its list of targets. These chucklefucks can't even properly cover their own asses let alone pass significant laws. I mean, you'd think that by this level of power you could at least have some dudes on payroll to destroy evidence, hide bodies, and so on, but apparently they have been operating on some sort of policy of just winging it.

I guarantee you that if Hillary Clinton had won and proceeded to make everyone who talked shit about her during the campaign disappear she would already have multiple fall guys set up, airtight alibis, and not a single shred of physical evidence tying anything to anyone connected to her.

Like, I expect my elected representatives to be corrupt, but why is it apparently too much to ask for them to be competently corrupt?
