things and stuff

I am back from vacation, spent about a week in sunny Florida, it was a surprisingly nice trip considering I don't usually like traveling much, and I will tell you all about it... tomorrow or something.

Today I found a guest post on the blog! It is from a few days ago and y'all should read it, I found that not many have so far and that is shameful. It is on the topic of inclusiveness in a game company. I had a though on that too, which I will share with you... tomorrow or something.

Oh, apparently charges are being brought against an FBI agent for statements related to the shooting of one of the idiot rednecks who took over the Malheur Wildlife Refuge office a year or so ago, I imagine there is gonna be some shit coming down out of that, I'll talk more about it... tomorrow or something.

Today I want to talk about supporting your creative friends.

I am not terribly creative in many ways, I have never made myself really learn how to play music, I can't do crap with the visual arts, poetry leaves me cold, I do this blog and create RPG settings, I also talk a lot about the things I want to write, but I never finish anything, and rarely get beyond the starting line. That is fine, I am not alone in that and it doesn't make me a worse person or anything. But I do have friends who are, who can create art of assorted varieties, who do finish books, who are good enough that they can and do get paid for their work.

That is amazing to me, not so much that they can do it, I feel like the potential for most creative expression is in everyone, but the fact that they do do it sets them apart from others. That motivation or whatever it is is something I admire and thus far have not been able to replicate in myself. Most of us don't do it, don't tell me otherwise, when was the last time you finished a novel? Or painted something beautiful, or drew a zine? My guess is for most of us it wasn't recently, or ever. And like I said, that is okay, but for those who are able to finish a project, who are so inspired by whatever they are creating that they choose to share it with the world, that is something pretty great and should be supported.

I feel like the best way to do that is to just be interested in their work, I haven't always been the best at expressing this, but I want to read whatever people I know write. I expressed this desire to a friend of mine recently and the reaction seemed strangely surprised to me, like they weren't used to having people say they want to see what they had created. Now this was through the medium of text, and I may have been missing something or reading something into the conversation that wasn't there, but I found that kind of, I dunno, sad almost? Like, shouldn't that be a thing everyone wants to do?

So, support your local artist by purchasing their art if it for sale, that is key, support them also by showing an interest in their art too, be excited to purchase their book or view their sculpture. Why aren't you excited? Aren't they your friend? Aren't you interested in neat things your friends make?

I mean... unless you aren't, I suppose fake interest is worse than no interest for many people, but come on now, most of us can manage to scrounge up a little bit of enthusiasm for most things right?

I dunno, I am sleepy and maybe not making sense, I just want to see people being excited about other people making stuff, that shit is hard.
