Holy crap it's late and I haven't been able to put words on the screen, I am gonna settle for the start of a topic and pick it up tomorrow after I have slept a bit.
Why do you suppose immortality is so often looked on as a curse in fiction? This extends to all forms of long life really, basically if you don't die when others would. Now obviously there are long lived characters like elves and shit, but they don't count because they aren't human. It seems that no matter what character it is, be it vampire, human with a "curse" wizard, cyborg, or other, there is always either angst about being old, or the theme is of an inevitable descent into madness and evil, the hero is always the young kid who overthrows the ancient evil, at best they get helped by a kindly wizard or something that more often than not looses its life not long after stepping out of retirement to provide training or inspiration.
I have theories of my own on the topic, and I will expand on them in a few hours or so after I sleep properly.
