Ted Cruz the delusional

I've talked about Donald Trump a lot, I believe he is the best thing to happen to the Democratic party in a long time and regardless of if he gets the nom, which is looking pretty likely assuming the one poll out of Indiana I have seen is right, he has done in my opinion irreversible damage to the GOPs image and motivated opposition turnout like no one has really ever done before. But honestly, of the people in the race he wouldn't be the worst president or even the worst candidate the Republicans could put up in the general.

That honor goes to Ted Cruz, a man who I viscerally hate and who has literally brought this country to the brink of ruin before already.

It is a mistake to write Cruz off as a stereotypical evil politician who does anything he can for power and has no real beliefs other than that he should be in charge. He is evil, and truly believes he should be in charge, but he does legitimately believe in his religion, it is a fucked up apocalyptic evangelical religion, but he believes in it with all of his heart and what's more, doesn't realize that the majority of the country do not share his beliefs. He truly thinks that the nation is waiting for him to take the reigns and place Christianity(his version) in it's rightful place as the official religion of America.

A somewhat unfair thing atheists do on occasion is describe Christian religion as an apocalyptic death cult, but Cruz's beliefs fit that description perfectly, while Trump might get us into a nuclear war with Russia because Putin insults his hair, Cruz is nearly certain to burn the world because he believes that the righteous deserve to do so.

Cruz won't be president though, mostly because I don't think he realizes that people actually disagree with him, he thinks they are at worst momentary dupes taken in by his opposition and at best, totally agree and just aren't speaking up, a silent majority if you will. Case in point is his recent stuff about Trans people in bathrooms.

For those unaware, North Carolina passed a bill that strips assorted LGBT protections as well as specifically states that bathrooms can only be used by those whose birth certificate gender matches that of the bathroom. There has been a little bit of backlash on that from pretty much everyone who isn't a hardcore conservative and even many of them seem less than thrilled with it. Cruz is, obviously, a supporter.

Donald Trump meanwhile made comments that could be spun to say he disagreed with the law, then backtracked the next day and basically waved his hands and said "States rights" which are basically magic words to the base on that side of the aisle.support

Cruz, sensing weakness, because everyone agrees with him remember, has been running absurdly offensive attack adds against Trump on the topic

The above is a screenshot from one of his adds and it is the least offensive part of any of them. He seems to believe that all trans folks are pedophiles desperate to get at our unaccompanied minors in public restrooms, despite the utter lack of evidence for that, it's a pretty messed up view and while he does have his adherents obviously, nationally this is not a winning issue for him, it attracts creepy evangelicals and bigots, but absolutely alienates everyone else, including the business community, which largely is beginning to recognize the PR nightmare that bigotry against the LGBT community is.

Even most Republicans on the level Cruz is at tend to avoid attacks like this even if they do believe in them, it isn't good optics and you can accomplish much of the same stuff by screwing with bills in subtle ways that are harder to directly put down to bigotry. Ted Cruz believes that the majority of the country is just waiting to support him and his ideas, they just haven't been told to stand up and say it yet.

He's incredibly delusional and divisive, and can't even claim outsider cred like Trump can, no one who isn't already on board with him believes he will change the system for them, and while Trump has a little crossover appeal to stupid liberals who want to burn it all down, Cruz can't even do that, to my mind he is hands down the worst general election candidate and I hope he manages to screw his way to the nomination in June, him losing in historic fashion would be the best present possible.
