Take a fucking wild guess what this post is about.

A while back, after the mass shooting in Charleston, I posted a swear filled rant attacking anyone and everyone for still supporting the status quo of gun laws in this country, it happened again today, this time here in Oregon, Umqua Community College by Roseburg specifically. At least ten people are dead including the shooter, and upwards of twenty are injured, we can only hope they all recover.

This time around it was President Obama with the angry tirade, and he absolutely was angry, he is a much better speaker and probably writer than I will ever be, but his usual preference for a soft touch was not in evidence today, he spoke of being sick of the usual pattern of shooting, recriminations, nothing, whenever one of these events take place, he spoke of his frustration with Congress and with a certain organization that claims to represent gun owners, and to a point, he expressed frustration with the American people who can't take the blinders off for even a minute to pressure their representatives to institute even the mildest common sense restrictions on gun ownership.

It was an impressive speech, and a fast turnaround, less than six hours after the shooting he was talking, which means either he was speaking like this off the cuff, or since the last shooting he had this speech written and ready to go, either way it is a depressing situation.

We know virtually nothing of the shooter at the moment, his name has been released, and he is a white male, other than that very little information is available, I will not be sharing his name here. But I can guess what we will find.

"He was a quiet man," "No one saw this coming," "He had some weird ideas but I had no idea he would do this." We'll probably find a history of either diagnosed mental illness, or at least a regular pattern of speaking to psychiatrists and therapists, there will be a manifesto, it will be either racist or sexist, possibly both.

He probably should never have been sold a gun, but will have purchased all of his firearms legally and in the past few months.

In short, if we had passed laws requiring background checks and waiting periods before selling firearms to someone, and making sure those restrictions were followed, we might not be having this conversation, again, today, just as Dylan Roof might have been prevented from his rampage, and dozens, hundreds, others over the last decade as well.

I dearly wish that this will be the event that forces a national change in how gun violence and possession is handled, and that we see rules and regulation put in place that can catch these things, I wish that this prompts a bigger investment in our mental healthcare system, so people with these tendencies can be diagnosed and treated.

It wouldn't be enough to my mind, as far as I am concerned we don't deserve our toys, our citizens and those who are supposed to protect us have proved time and time again that they don't need the excuse of insanity to murder people. I know that isn't going to happen though, our Constitution may as well be a holy document for all chance we have of changing it these days, but the worst part is that my dream, of eliminating private firearm ownership entirely, is only slightly less likely than the common sense plan I wished for in the previous paragraph.

Fuck that guy, fuck those people, fuck.
