Iran, so far away.

Debate on the Iran deal began today in congress, currently it looks like there is enough support to ratify it, which is good because regardless of what the US decides to do, it appears that the other signatories of the treaty intend to go ahead with it on their part, if we drop out, especially after pushing so hard for the deal in the first place, it will only hurt the US on the world stage.

I am of mixed feelings about treaties like this, essentially bullying other countries and laying down rules for how they are run, I don't think anyone country should have the right to dictate to another what they choose to research, on the other hand, Iran is a pretty messed up place, and might very well decide to nuke somebody should they get a hold of a weapon.

Of course, the same could be said about rather a lot of governments in the Middle East, including Israel, hell it can be said about the United States, about half the current Republican presidential candidates seem like they would glass the entire region given half a chance, and indeed would prefer that rather than negotiate something that might lead to a lasting peace. They are joined in that desire it seems by the current Israeli government, which spent some time over the summer attempting to do its own policy dictating towards the USA on the topic.

I guess that is really the main problem, all these parties attempting to tell the others what to do as if they are the final arbiters of what is right and just, Israel is a human rights nightmare with regard to Palestine, and the treatment of non-jews within the country also makes me uneasy, of course, Iran straight up outlaws certain religions and leadership of the country has gone on record since the agreement was made public about how they still totes hate America guys. Russia is a signatory, and they seem to be pushing for a new Soviet Union based on their activities in Ukraine this summer, as well as some pretty unpleasant historical revisionism when it comes to Stalin.

Then there's us, the country founded on stealing native people's land and built on the backs of slaves, the only country to have deployed nuclear weapons in anger, the one currently undergoing a run up to a presidential election that looks like it is going to pick a completely insane warmonger  as on of the candidates.

No one looks good here is what I am saying, and I always am sort of surprised that any agreement at all was made and war hasn't broken out, yet, sometimes I am too cynical I guess. The only way we start change is by talking, and that still seems to be preferred, the talk is often horrible, but at least it is talk i guess.
